Strauch Drum Carders

High quality fiber prep equipment for the serious fiber enthusiast in us all. Strauch equipment is 100% made in the USA. From the components manufactured in the US to the wood which comes from American forests, you can rest assured your carder has been made with care to stand up to years of use. Just ask me, AKA Lunabud, I have been using the same Strauch Finest carder since 08 to create the Spin Me Batts on this site as well as many of the one of a kind batts we sell at shows. This little work horse has traveled to 8 different states and never once misses a beat. If my arm could crank it all day long it would work just as well at the end of the day as it did in the beginning! I LOVE MY STRAUCH CARDER!

A fun little fact. Have you seen the hand in the photo above before, say on a magazine? Guess whose hand that is...... If you said Lunabud's you would have guessed 100% correctly! The picture was taken at the Kentucky Sheep and Fiber Festival while Lunabud and the other Luna of Blueball Mnt were having a crack at the carder! How fun is that!

This top-of-the-line model is unique and comes
complete with the Brush Attachment and all available accessories.

Having a chain as the drive mechanism provides a constant positive non-slipping action while carding and is far superior to belt drives.

The wood frame is solid ash with a warm honey-oak/tung oil finish. The large drum is 7" in diameter x 8¼" wide. The small drum is 2" in diameter x 8" wide. The carder produces a batt approximately 8" wide x 22" long. The frame is 24" long, 11½" wide, 6" high.

An important feature: The tall frame allows the handle to swing freely of the table surface.

This unit is equipped with the #05 -128 tpi (teeth per square inch) fine carding cloth on the large drum and our unique "Slicker-Licker" cloth on the small drum. Designed to handle ALL fibers, including Merino, Llama, Alpaca, Cashmere blend, dog hair and other exotics.

The 6" high frame permits a larger sprocket on the small drum giving this carder a 5:1 drum ratio. With minimal turning, you obtain more carding action per revolution. This ratio produces a beautiful, well blended batt. Two to three passes are usually sufficient for a nice spinning batt.

The "Finest" is also available as a motorized model. If you choose the manual model, it can later be upgraded to a motorized carder.

The Mad Batt'r is Otto's answer to the wacky and Mad Batt'r in all of us! And I have to say it is the perfect joining of the Louet Classics big deep teeth and Otto Strauch's blade drum to help open up fibers to prevent sticking and the awesome capabilities of the slicker brush attachment. Ooooh and it is chain driven! Talk about some smooth cranking;) OMG...... THIS CARDER WILL ROCK YOUR WORLD!

Into the the Mad Batt'r I have tossed picked super soft lamb fleece & coarser adult fleece, mohair locks, sari silk remnants, my huge chunky nepps, combed tops, rovings, this and that from here there and every where. I am HUGELY IMPRESSED with this carders ability to eat up picked silk remnants and silk noil, and yet still manage to keep the bladed drum fairly clean!

From Otto.......Our customers requested a Strauch-quality carder that would produce those wonderful, outrageous "art batts" full of exciting fibers and textures.

We now offer the Strauch Model 302 "Mad Batt'r" art
drum carder as part of our regular product line. This carder has deeper and coarser carding cloth on the large drum to accommodate all the fun add-ins that make these art batts say spin me!.

The machine is built on the standard 200 series 4" tall solid
ash-wood frame and, like all my drum carders, uses the
unique "Slicker-Licker" cloth on the small drum. As with all
of our 200 series carders, the Mad Batt'r has a 4:1 turning ratio.

The brush attachment makes it easier to control the type of
art batt you are making. The batts produced are 8" wide and 27" long.

Special tools included with each Mad Batt'r are:

The popular Knuckle-Saving-Batt-Pick, an invaluable tool for removing the batt without damage to the equipment or the user.
A Doffer/Cleaner Brush to thoroughly and easily clean any residual fibers from the carding drum.
A small cleaner/dabber brush for use on the licker in drum.
Table clamps to secure the carder to the work surface.
